How did WW2 submarines know the weather when on long missions?

Question:
How did submarines (or any ship for that matter) avoid major storms during WW2 if they were out of touch with their bases for weeks at a time? Were there any subs lost to weather?

Answer: Submarines probably had less to worry about from weather than other vessels. In very bad weather they could aways submerge for a while.
